KOLKATAMARS Group of companies, the largest importer of Gurjan timber in India and leading producer of plywood and face veneer, has acquired five tea estates in North Bengal. The tea eardens which the company has acquired are Raimatang, Kalchini, Buxa Dooars and two more in the same area. The company aims to invest Rs 100 crore for acquiring more tea gardens in eastern India.

Mr. Roshan Lal Agarwal, chairman and managing director of the company said: “Last year, MARS Group had taken the decision to take over of closed tea gardens in Dooars region of north Bengal. We have not only sorted out and overcome the problems regarding various issues including many statutory settlements and other associated problems.

The entire worker fraternity of these gardens were deep down in poverty and we all have witnessed the acute socio – economic problems in these areas. Restoration of employment to few thousand people is the testimony of our corporate social responsibility (CSR).”

Mr. Goutam Bhattacharya, president (Marketing), MARS Ply, said :”Nearby hospitals, schools have been re-opened and the local administration at all level have rendered their support and we could very well identify the change in attitude of the new government and the personal involvement of our chief minister Mamata Banerjee in the recent past.

There are many more problems to be addressed and we are seeking the assistance from the labour, commerce and other departments of the West Bengal government for making a complete turn around at the earliest. Currently the company is heading towards its aspiration level and expected to achieve better performances by launching new and innovative products.”

The company, established in 1992, has its four state of the art production units near Kolkata, North Bengal and Kerala, producing high quality plywood, block board, flush door and veneer with the help of experienced, highly skilled people, supported with latest machinery, using100% imported gurjun timber.
